Large Krestovskiy Bridge over the Malaya Nevka River 9.24.2014

Translated from Russian Wikipedia:
Large Krestovskiy Bridge (Большой_Петровский мост) crosses the Malaya Nevka River to connect the Petrograd and Krestovskiy Islands through the Petrograd district in St. Petersburg. It is located in the alignment of Big Zelenina street on the Petrograd side and Petrograd street on Krestovskogo Island.

The first bridge appeared here in 1850. By 1928, there was a wooden 11th-flight bridge on wooden poles. The middle of the swing span consisted of four wooden masts. The bridge opening was hand operated. The bridge was 126.4 meters long and 17.9 meters wide.

In 1946, the bridge was no longer able to open because of poor draw span conditions. By 1948, the technical condition of the entire bridge needed major repairs. The need a new bridge was due, not only to the poor condition, but also its position on an important traffic artery leading to parks, stadiums, water bases, rest homes and sanatoriums.

Between 1949-1951 the bridge was completely rebuilt by project Engineer Lengiproinzhproject PV St. Andrew's and the architect L. Noskov. A later repair of the bridge was made in 1993.

The reconstruction of 1996 affected the swing span of the bridge. the boardwalk was replaced by a metal plate with a polyurethane coating on the roadway and sidewalks. The 2005-2006 reconstruction included the repair of metal movable bridge spans. This took place from October 2005 to July 2006.

The 2007 reconstruction was carried out in order to restore the waterproofing and asphalt pavement to the permanent bays and a thin layer of polymer coating on the roadway of the movable span.

The bridge has five spans. The middle span is the swing. The remaining four permanent spans are covered metal welded together dvuhprolёtnymi continuous beam construction.

The steel divorcement spans consist of two parts, each of which has its axis of rotation and rigidly fixed counterweights. In the closed state it is a cantilever beam with a longitudinally-movable hinge in the middle. In cross section, each span consists of seven main beams, with four beams have a rotation axis beam (and three rotation axes are not). The maximum full opening angle is 78 °. Opening is done by electric winches, but there is a manual drive for emergencies.

The reinforced concrete abutments of the bridge are massive, provided with check walls. The body rests on foundation pillars having a low pile grillage. Piles in the foundations are 10m wooden pillars.

The river supports are monolithic reinforced concrete hollow box-type. The supports for the movable span consist of paired columns, connected by decorative concrete arches instead of single thick supports (usually constructed in bridges with the draw span). The foundations supports are high-pile raft foundation. Piles in the foundations are metal pipes filled with concrete.

The sidewalk is separated from the roadway by high granite curbs on the permanent spans and metal on the bill of divorcement. There is a cast iron railing, consisting of poles and pedestals. On the foundations of the bridge there are piers and a granite parapet. The lampposts are cast iron in tubular section. Two octagonal lantern suspend from the curly brackets.

This bridge does not appear in the urban layout graph because its middle span rises on special requests only a few times a year. The Large Krestovskiy bridge was the first major bridge built in Leningrad after the war.
